Pentair Haffmans and BTS Biogas new exhibitors

Pentair Haffmans’ biogas upgrading technology based on membrane separation in combination with a cryogenic system recovers 100% of the CH4, completely eliminates the harmfull ‘methane slip’ and CO2 as by-product can be recovered for use in a variety of applications.

BTS Biogas is the largest provider of biogas plants in Italy and is a pioneer in this sector. BTS Biogas is a supplier of two biogas upgrading technologies, bioMETANM based on membrane separation and bioMETANW based on water scrubbing.

Bright future for biogas upgrading in Sweden

After a couple of rough years the biogas upgrading sector starts to look pretty good in Sweden due to the following reasons.

1) Extended state aid approved for biomethane, i.e. no energy tax and no carbon dioxide tax on biomethane used as vehicle fuel until end of 2020.

2) The Swedish politicians are working on long term sustainable policies and instruments to replace the tax exemption.

3) The support for anaerobic digestion of manure is doubled to a little bit more than 4 €cent/kWh.

4) “Klimatklivet” is providing 600 million SEK/year (approx. 63 MEUR/year) during 2016, 2017 and 2018 as investment support for projects leading to reduced GHG emissions. Biogas as vehicle fuel turns out favourably since the Swedish power sector is more or less decarbonised since many years back.

5) There is an EU directive stating that “Member States shall ensure that a sufficient number of publicly accessible refuelling points are available, with maximum distances of 150 km, to allow the circulation of CNG vehicles Union-wide by 31 December 2020 at the latest.” Due to the limited Swedish natural gas grid, off grid solutions will play a central part to fulfill the directive and here local production of biogas followed by upgrading and connected to a filling station will be crucial. Many of the existing 162 public filling stations in Sweden are operated in this way. With the directive new stations have to be built, especially in the northern part of Sweden.

6) Swedish politicians have an ambition that the transport sector should be fossil fuel independent at 2030. As there are not many years left the instruments promoting renewables and punishing fossil fuels have to be stronger and stronger which of course will be favourable for biomethane.

7) Small scale gasification and methanation is on the verge to be commercialized. Sweden with vast forest resources will likely see demo plants and commercial plants within the coming years. Just as in anaerobic digestion the carbon dioxide has to be removed and here biogas upgrading technologies are of major interest.
